Hurricane Debby made landfall on the gulf coast of Florida on August 5th and is scheduled to spend the next several days dropping record breaking amounts of rainfall up the East Coast of the United States. In fears that the storm may produce rainfall like Hurricane Florence (2018), several areas are taking Debby seriously. All low-lying areas, such as Charleston, South Carolina, are preparing for the worst. With any slowmoving system, flooding is always a threat, especially well after the storm has moved on and accumulated rainfall begins to overflow the rivers and waterways. Widespread wind damage may not be as big a threat with Debby as she is forecasted to become a tropical storm and then a depression, but tornados will always be a concern.
With the start of what is predicted to be an active Hurricane season, the ground being saturated will always be a major issue with storms that may follow behind. The names next in line will be Ernesto and Francine. The North Carolina coastal area is no stranger to damaging storms that start with “F” like Floyd, Fran and Florence. Maybe we should pay attention to Francine, but let’s hope not.
